Why I Won’t Be Purchasing an E-Book

Ah, what an innovative generation we live in. Now, instead of having to head to the library or the bookstore to buy a handheld copy of a book, we are able to access a whole world of ebooks online. While this has made books easier to access to the public with ever-growing schedules, it makes one wonder, “when was the last time I sat down with a hard-copy of a book?”

For me, the answer is quite recently, as I prefer a more old-school way of reading. I’ve never been a fan of ebooks as a) there’s some kind of enjoyment to be held from turning a page and/or finishing a novel and b) every time I read an ebook, I feel as though my eyes are burning by the end. For me, hard-copy has always been the way to go, as I grew up on this way of reading and have generally managed to avoid new technologies that try to change this.

While I think that it’s great that so many more people are able to access books in a way that works for them, I do encourage everyone to go out and read a physical copy of a book. I think that nowadays, we get lost in technology and must remember the simple past times, like reading a tangible book. All in all, I think we all can agree that nothing beats the nostalgia of sitting down with a good novel.

I understand your perspective on e-books as I used to feel the same way about them, but recently I got a tablet and decided to give e-books a try. It’s now become the main way I read, mostly because I have a better reading experience overall. If I come across a word I don’t know, I can easily highlight it and have it defined immediately. I also like to lie down on my side, so when I read in bed it’s way easier to read off a tablet. Tablets also have light so when I’m reading in bed at night I can just read with my lights off. I still like reading off of physical books, but I’m also pretty glad I have e-books as an option.
