I really enjoyed listening to my classmates’ presentations. One that stood out to me was about the use of comic books to teach ESL learners. This got me thinking about how students in general could benefit from reading comic books as part of the curriculum. Because comic books are sequenced and so image based, I think they could be useful with understanding difficult subject matter such as history lessons. In Dyson’s piece, she mentions that one of the students used the visual image of a cartoon character to build on a historical scene for a group project (Dyson 355). I think this could make detailed lessons for memorable as students will be able to link classroom lessons to something more visual. By creating something like a comic book to show the understanding of a subject, they would also be able to practice their writing and multi-modality skills and be able to target more than one skill within one assignment.
