Here are some of the notable sponsors I wrote down when we did the in-class exercise about all the different types of literacy sponsors that we’ve had:
- The United States Government (lol)
- it is mandated that children go to school and get an education
- My Parents (see previous post)
- DePaul University
- while college did not teach me to read/ write, it did teach me how to be a better reader/ writer
- St. Peter Lutheran School & Church
- I was the weird kid who went to a tiny private school from k-8 grade. Whilst I did not enjoy being indoctrinated with Christian dogma, I do think I got a particularly good education since my class consisted only of 20ish children and teachers paid a lot of attention to us.
- The Modern Language Association (also hate myself for putting this)
- This organization has surely shaped how I write and format what I write.
- Schaumburg High School
- also government mandated
- Victoria’s Secret (it applies… I promise)
- I was employed here for nearly two years. I got promoted a bunch and was sent to training seminars and had to take ‘classes’ on retail language, customer service conversation, and legal things.
- My Math Teachers
- They are the reason I am somewhat proficient in mathematical language. I mean, I know what the symbols stand for, but I cannot guarantee you a correct answer…
- My Spanish Teachers
- I can speak conversational spanish and read Spanish rather proficiently.
- Young Chicago Authors
- This organization taught me how to write creatively and I found my poetic voice through the programs that they do.
