Technology Resistance

By March 11, 2018BlogPost

I have always been resistant to computers and sophisticated technology of that sort. In an increasingly tech/ gadget obsessed world, I find myself somewhat isolated and alienated. So many people I know have Apple watches and fitbits and Alexas and their own websites, and then there’s me: I know absolutely nothing about coding or the mechanics of the internet, I cringe when I have to update my iPhone, and I can barely use my Mac properly even though I’ve had it for nearly four years. The only things I use my devices for are the following few things: internet, social media, schoolwork (Word, Powerpoint), and creative writing (Word).

Maybe it’s because I was born during a time when the internet, computers, and phones were still being developed that I’ve never been interested in becoming ‘tech literate.’ I didn’t even get my first cell-phone until I was 12, and it was a Motorola Razor that didn’t even have internet access. Nowadays, kids are using iPads and cell phones before they learn how to walk. If you’ve ever watched a baby unlock an iPhone and start taking photos with your front camera, you know what I’m talking about.

I know it’s bad to dismiss this technology and refuse to acclimate to the increasingly tech-y climate, but I just can’t get into the whole thing, or maybe it’s that I haven’t yet found the thing that attracts me to the tech-climate. Even the blogging for this class weirds me out and I think that’s why I’ve avoided it so far — I don’t like the thought of my reflections and insights being documented permanently (and somewhat publicly) on a website I don’t know how to use. I know I will have to jump into the technology stream at some point and become computer literate, but we’ll see when that’ll be.

I can completely agree with all of this! All of my friends seem to be so obsessed with using the newest technology, feeling that it’s more effective and innovative. I, however, am the total opposite. My friends are always getting on me about how I never update my phone or applications because I simply don’t care. I also don’t feel a huge desire to post a ton on social media, as I don’t feel this huge connection with our currently technology-obsessed world. If I think something’s cool then yeah, I’ll post every once in awhile, but I just don’t have this similar obsession with posting for the attention of others. I can also agree about the whole blogging thing – I’m really shy about posting opinionated things typically so this has been weird for me as well!

Basically, we are on the same level I am also not a computer person, let alone math or a science guy either. I am not interested at all that in coding and messing with computer hardware and stuff like that, it all seems really boring. I don’t mind writing blog posts or essays on my computer but what I can’t stand is taking notes on my laptop. I don’t know what it is but it just doesn’t seem right. Maybe I remember what I write down better, so that’s why I need a pencil and paper to take good effective notes but that honestly, is just a guess.
