Everything is Political

So, during one of the many fantastic presentations (good job, my beautiful classmates!) we had a small group discussion regarding our social media usage. It came up that some people are really tired of being bombarded with political news and are avoiding social media sites because of it.

Now, I am sitting at work and it is a very slow day, so there is nothing for me to do unless a patron comes up to me with a request. Somehow, I started thinking about how dark nursery rhymes actually are. In fact, from what I remember, many nursery rhymes were never meant for children, but were actually political news stories that could not be outright stated due to potential punishment.

For example, most people already know “Ring-Around-The-Rosie” is about the Black Plague, but “Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary” is actually about the Queen Mary of Scotland. She wanted Britain to return to Catholicism and when people disagreed, she killed them. So, her growing “garden” with all the flowers “in a row” is actually describing a grave yard. “Three Blind Mice” is about an assassination attempt that goes horribly wrong and ends in the death of the three conspirators. “Jack and Jill” is potentially about how the King and Queen of France were beheaded during the French Revolution.

I guess, what I’m trying to say is that there has never been a time or a place where politics hasn’t been important or influenced the world.
