Who Sponsored My Literacy ?

When thinking about those who sponsored by literacy, it’s a little crazy to think about just how many people had an influence on my level of comprehension that I have today. When I think of those who helped me become literate, the main people that come to mind are my parents. I remember from an early age how they enrolled me in several book clubs for young children and always made sure my bookshelf was stocked with new reads. I think that the support from them to continue reading is part of what shaped me to enjoy it so much and continue these practices throughout my young-adult life. I distinctly remember how shocked I was when talking to friends in high school, realizing that it was not necessarily the “norm” to have a huge collection of books in the house. I will never take for granted how privileged I was to have access to so many books at a young age, as it definitely played in a role in shaping me into the person I am today.

However, when doing the in-class activity, I realized how many other individuals have influenced my literacy. Whether it be my friends, teachers, participation in sports teams, the public school I attended, or even the small rural community I grew up in, all had a great influence in how I communicate today. This activity was really eye-opening in the sense that it made me realize how everyone’s individual experiences truly impact their literacy.
