After reading “The Literate and the Literary: African Americans as Writers and Readers” by Elizabeth McHenry and Shirley Brice Heath and briefly talking about it with a classmate, we should create a Literary Club!
According to the previously mentioned reading, Literary Clubs had some pretty unique schedules including something to do with music (dancing? singing? raving? The article doesn’t specify), listening to a reading, talking about the reading, and then sharing some interesting quotes (426). While this sounds interesting, I prefer the other literary clubs mentioned.
Basically they got together, read each other’s works and helped to get one another published. Doesn’t that sound awesome!? I think we should start a Literary club that gets together, edits each other’s works, and then help find ways to get it published. It could be anything ranging from a chapter from a novel to a letter to the editor. I think it would help us create a portfolio, improve our writing, and prepare us in finding a job after college.
I am free every Monday right after class and maybe we could hold it in the Invention Lab.
Who’s with me!?
