“Blessings keep falling into my lap”-Chance The Rapper, this is one of the best ways I can describe my learning environment when growing up. All of my family members and teachers have supported and enabled me to improve my literacy. Although, the most impactful person who really got me into reading and writing was my mom. My dad was also involved but he was working longer hours than my mom so she had to create lessons for my brother and me. My mom would have us watch a cartoon called LeapFrog, play games, and print out little lesson books…she did all of this just so so that our reading and writing abilities would improve and get us ahead of the class. Later as we entered middle and elementary school she continued to make us read for at least an hour a day before we were able to go out and play or watch tv. She put in all of this hard work, despite dealing with both my brother and I’s whining and crying, to push us to practice our literacy ability so that we could do well in class, not be held back a year, do better on standardized testings, etc. At the time my brother and I obviously didn’t understand how impactful this would be in our near future, but we’re absolutely thankful for her commitment and toleration.
