I am interested in learning more about the ways in which new media platforms affect literacy learning. Does someone who has learned how to skillfully navigate the twitter word count restrictions translate as a more direct and concise writer in academic settings? Does the person with the best memes understand intertextuality at a deeper level than other writers? I am curious as to whether the knowledges of popular new media communication forms and platforms affect the way in which newer generations learn to read and write. I remember reading an article that discussed how the way social media platforms are set up influence our reading style. That our generation, just as newer generations are used to skimming rather than reading because our heavy use of social media has trained our brains to do so. I am curious as to whether this is true, and if so is this a good thing or a bad thing? Will becoming skimmers rather than readers take away from our reading comprehension or will it make is faster and better test takers? Personally, I think social media and the use of things like emojis, bitmojis, and memes as forms of communication do affect the way we read and write. I am just curious to see if it translates into standardized academic teachings of literacy.
