Who Sponsored My Literacy?

By February 4, 2018BlogPost

I haven’t really gave this much thought until now. After much pondering, I would have to say my parents are my largest sponsor of literacy. This was extremely relevant when I first began reading. I was at an awkward stage as my birthday was just after the school deadline, but my parents decided to put me a grade ahead for some reason. My cognitive skill of reading suffered in comparison to other classmates due to my young age, so my parents forced me to “hit the books.” Without the positive reinforcement I received from my parents, my literacy skills would have suffered immensely. Their support within reading perpetuated until high school, where I could finally learn and think for myself. So now, my sponsor of literacy comes more so from my interests, influences, and school mainly. Obviously, it is easy to see how school sponsors one’s reading literacy as it forces you to read for class; however, one’s interests is more difficult to see. People that I regularly watch/listen to (I.E. entertainers, radio show hosts, rappers, etc.) drive my interest in certain novels. For example, I’m a die-hard Big Sean fan, and my interest in his music has inspired me to read certain novels. He often preaches of philosophy and mediation, which inspired me to read certain novels like the Seven Spiritual Laws to Success and Living Beautifully: With Ambiguity and Uncertainty. Additionally, I somewhat sponsor my own literacy as I actively reach out and try to read books that have subject matter that interests me. I’m not too sure if one can sponsor his or her own literacy, but I believe that it’s feasible.

I really enjoyed reading this article. Great points that was made in the post. Your example of Big Sean being a big influence on your literacy is a good one to use because I can say the same thing as some artists have an impact on my literacy because it is true and Big Sean is a good artist and talks about good positive issues and topics. Also, you saying you had an influence on your own literacy is relatable. I think you can somewhat have an impact on your own work because you have to push yourself to do something.
